Design For Life

Design For Life on BBC has just finished last Monday. What I was impressed with is that Stark is always emphasizing that it is not a school of design, but a school of creativity. He invested in MyDeco and he is an advocate of democratizing design, but through this TV series he acted (or actually he was) as a famous designer, a kind of celebrity.

Anyway, his approach and evaluation is based on something more than just aesthetically beautiful things. The winner has a strong ambition and finally achieved it. That energy is really appreciated.

In the process, the competitors were always asked to approach the problem more conceptually, but the final products are more or less beautiful. Just making beautiful things might not be difficult anymore, but making genuinely meaningful and useful things seems to be gradually getting harder, since our life becomes (or inherently tends to be) less material. Making things is less important, or even worse than making nothing. We need to pay attention to how to grab true opportunities of improving our lives behind our ordinal consciousness. We should not underestimate traditional design skills, but more abstract and conceptual process might become more important than what it used to be.

The TV series is available to see on BBC iPlayer until 9:14pm Monday 26th October 2009.
