Why is "design" important for innovation?

For people in design industry, that question might be too obvious to ask anew, but I have read some articles about design-led innovation recently for finding an addressable new subject for a PhD research, and I found out a controversy about "design thinking".

The main point of the argument are two: one is about whether "design thinking" can be extracted from the skill set of the traditional design discipline or not, and the other is about the effectiveness of user-centred research. These arguments made me think about how "design" can contribute to making innovation in the first place.

Obviously there are a lot of factors for making innovation, and of course there is other arguments, such as about what innovation is and what design is, but I thought, for the most basic aspect of making innovation or coming up with new ideas, "design" can provide some clues about how to get out of our daily points of view, how to see and think about things in a different way. Of course, just only coming up with new ideas is not enough to make innovation, but at least it is one of the advantages of "design".

Then, here is a question about what "design" is again. In terms of this point, this is more about just the process, and design must have other advantages such as emotionally attracting customers and so on, so personally I feel some part can be extracted from the traditional "design", and some part cannot. Then which part will be more important in the future seems to be still uncertain and depend on what the future is like.
