There must be various reasons, but one of them are the social shift from owning to sharing. In terms of music, it has become quite easy to enjoy shared music thanks to youtube, sportify and so on. For enjoying music, you no longer have to own the music. Some services provide access to music almost like on demand, for free.

For new projects, I have met some product designers and read articles about the market, and one of the big issues for them is obviously that thesedays their products and ideas can be easily copied. Traditional counter attack such as patents does not seem to be as effectve as it used to be. Even some scholars have started to assert that patent systems stifle creativity. Now must be time to re-think how to protect intellectual propaty. the idea of "protecticting" them might be already obsolete, and we might have to take advantage of the trend of sharing. Of course the example of music is not necessarily able to apply to other categories, but there must be some lessons to be learned.
