How to design?
Actually, the definition of "Design" itself has been a big topic recently.
It might be partly because of the promotion of Design Thinking by IDEO.
Needless to say, it is no longer just making cool stuff.
It might be too simple statement, but everything is for problem solving and demand satisfying.
(this perspective has to be strongly influenced by the current paradigm of capitalism.)
Therefore, design also have to accomplish one of these purposes.
In terms of business, we need to pay attention to their customers, clients, or ,we might be able to say, their audience, not just for ourselves.
From this point of view, design is supposed to give some influence between you and your audience.
Them, the very simplified steps of design are the following:
1. Understanding yourself (or your clients)
2. Understanding Your audience (or your clients' audience)
3. Identifying what is needed to accomplish or solve
4. Providing the proper deliverables
In the past, the earlier steps might have been easier, then the later more difficult, but now the difficulty must be the other way around.
Of course, designers have to keep the ability to create cool stuff, but identifying real opportunities through understanding business environment would be another ability they are asked to have now.
