Setting a goal first or Discovery-driven operation

I have been dedicating to write a essay recently, and during the process, I found that the process should be in two patterns; Setting a goal first or Discovery-driven operation.

The former is quite usual. Firstly you set a goal and conduct the writing process to get to the goal. The important thing is to leave some spaces in your mind for the case that the goal you set might be wrong, so eventually that approach is ideally a kind of mixture of Discovery-driven operation.

The latter is for cases that you cannot set a goal since there are too much uncertainty, because there are more or less some new discoveries during the writing process. Those new discoveries might be able to articulate the final goal.

Writing is very personal and it might be a too little thing to be called a project, but there might be a similar structure and way of thinking.
