Ning becomes paid-for

I remember when I heard about ning I thought it would be a great service, and it was. The news was a little bit shame.
I've been thinking about making a social network for creators, and ning has been one of the benchmarks. The functions are good enough for me, if it is needed to use my own domain or remove ads, it was not for free. Then, all of the free services stop soon.
I think there are still a lot of demands for a free platform for a social network services, or simply the users move to open-source platforms, such as BuddyPress and Elgg.
