Rereading Christensen (1)

“The Innovator’s Dilemma” is obviously a seminal book about innovation, even if your focal point is only on design-led innovation.

Recently I’ve been reading “The innovator’s solution”, which is a kind of sequel of “Dilemma”. It was published in 2003, but it gave me a lot of suggestions and insights for thinking about innovation.

The assumption for the background of my current research mainly relies on his proposition.

1.    Categorisation of Innovation
I haven’t exactly researched on the history of the definition of innovation, but there is supposed to be loads of definitions, so usually I narrow it down according to his categorisation. It is quite simple and just contains two; sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation.

a.    Sustaining innovation
This is usually incremental advance of performance and functionality. Established companies are usually good at developing this innovation. According to Christensen, most of innovations are this type.

b.    Disruptive  innovation
This kind of innovations initially do not look attractive for establish companies since firstly the market opportunity is small and seems to be risky, but they finally have a big impact and disrupt the existent market. Usually establish companies are not good at identifying these opportunities.
